“Be real, be righteous, and be relevant” – those are the words used by New Orleans rapper Dee-1’s grandfather to describe the type of hip-hop he represents. Just weeks after experiencing viral success with “Sallie Mae Back,” Dee-1 is pulling in two of the genre’s most notable spitters for his remix to another highly conscious tune titled “Against Us.”
“Lord, forgive us for our flexing and our selfish ways, and overlook the days that we didn’t pray after getting paid,” Big K.R.I.T. raps. The theme stays consistent throughout the record as all three spitters share stories about the tough environments they’ve managed to survive. “It’s nightmares where I came from, and my dream is to bring them where it ain’t none,” Lupe says towards the song’s end. Part of the “Lord’s Prayer” holds each verse together, ending with the powerful words, “Forgive those who trespass against us.”
“I only collab with people I’m friends with, the rest of that stuff is fake if there’s no real relationship with the artists,” Dee-1 said in a press release. “I’m thankful my homies Krit and Lupe could come together with me for this one. Compared to what’s out right now, this is hard. I hope everyone loves it like I do.”
“Against Us” remix serves as a warmup to the video that will be debuted later this month. Listen as Dee-1, Lupe Fiasco, and Big K.R.I.T. enlighten up above.
